AmeriCorps Week in Waco!

March 13th, 2013 • Posted By: Maggie Emerson • Make A Comment

Friends,

I have had such a delightful week! I often love Waco most when all the college kids (of whom I was indeed one just 10 short months ago) are out and the families and true Wacoans are around! This week is, as my post says, AmeriCorps Week. If you have read my bio, you know that I am working with Community HealthCorps at the Family Health Center. Through this, I am sponsored to serve as the Program Coordinator for Waco Arts Initiative.

All that to say, this week is a big national week of service for all those involved in AmeriCorps programs. Taking off from our normal 8-5 service, we are reaching out to the community, working with different organizations to make our name known and to get work done!

So far, our Community HealthCorps group has had the great opportunity to work with the Parks and Recreation Department, cleaning up a stretch of land on Herring between JJ Flewellen and Gholson; the Family Abuse Center, organizing their new kids center and homework room, playing games with kids, gardening and planting trees, and the Cameron Park zoo, offering CPZ memberships, cleaning up the ZOOtique, conducting a biodiversity survey, and managing the insane Spring Break crowds!

It has been so fun to be all over Waco, doing lots of different and fun work to make the Waco community a better place!  If you are interested in serving Waco in fun and exciting ways, check out the recruitment fair at the Family Health Center Lecture Hall tomorrow (3/14) at 5:30!

Also, if you want to give just an hour of time, stop by the Blood Drive we’re hosting at the Family Health Center on 1600 Providence Dr. Keep a look out for ways to help out in Waco! It is so fun to lend a helping hand and know that you are making an impact in the community!

Al Miraj, Waco’s New (and delicious!) Escape

February 16th, 2013 • Posted By: Maggie Emerson • Make A Comment

One of my favorite features about traveling to bigger cities is the opportunity to be transported across the country simply by entering a restaurant and dining on foreign cuisine. Waco has it’s share of great food locations, but none have had the remarkable ability to really make me feel as though I were no longer [...]

For the Love of You

February 15th, 2013 • Posted By: Maggie Emerson • Make A Comment

“For the Love of You” was simply wonderful. Normally, I would have never known that this event was occurring, where Hoffman Hall was, what Power of One Entertainment was, or how to have one of the greatest times in Waco. So this unexpected event that I put on my calendar has a story to go [...]

Waco Music Co-Op + Waco Arts Initiative

I have blogged about the Croft Art Gallery in downtown a few times because it is such a fantastic place. I love the rotating exhibits that open on First Fridays and the pop-up shows like yesterday’s Live Oak School show. I love the space, and I especially love when I can get a delightful espresso [...]

Wacoans Celebrate Rev. MLK Jr.

January 22nd, 2013 • Posted By: Maggie Emerson • Make A Comment

This past Saturday was a national day of service to honor Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and the ways in which he fought for equality and completely transformed this country for the better. His life inspires many still today to cross boundaries–be they racial, economical, or social–to unite with each other. This Monday, several schools [...]

Christmas in July…at least it feels like it.

December 28th, 2012 • Posted By: Maggie Emerson • Make A Comment

‘Twas a truly white Christmas. But days before and after, the weather heated up. With complaints filling my social media feeds, it was hard to put a positive spin on crazy Texas weather. But, before I left Waco to be with my family for the holidays, I hopped over to Lula Jane’s with a friend [...]

A Latte Fun!

There are often stories about throwdowns in Waco. Especially for one who works with middle schoolers, I hear about all sorts of “throwdowns.” It was my delight to hear about the friendly competition that Dichotomy was hosting this past week known as Thursday Night Throwdown between any barista or willing participant. Fellow Chisholm Crossing blogger, Jennifer, [...]

If you are a Waco resident and you have never visited the zoo, or if you simply marked it off your checklist and have yet to return…pack up the car and get ready for adventure! Our little ole city is full of the most wonderful things, and the zoo ranks near the top. As [...]

The Music Scene

Waco is known for a thing or two. Thanks to RG3, we are known for a little more. And thanks to Lomelda and others that are apart of the Waco Music Co-op, I believe in a few years we will be known for our music scene. My ears have been delighted with the sounds of [...]
